MT4 error 134 is the "not enough money" error. It means MetaTrader 4 won't open the trade because your account doesn't have enough free margin to support that position size. It's a safety block, not a fault — and the fix is usually to trade smaller or free up margin. Here's how.
You'll see "not enough money" in the order dialog and the Journal tab (press Ctrl+T) when an order is rejected for margin.

What error 134 means
To open a trade, your account needs enough free margin — the funds not already tied up in other positions — to cover that trade's margin requirement. If the requirement is larger than your free margin, MT4 rejects the order with error 134. It's protecting you from committing margin you don't have.
What causes error 134
- Lot size too large for your balance and leverage.
- Margin already in use by other open positions.
- Low leverage — a lower leverage means a higher margin requirement.
- High-margin instruments — some indices, metals, and crypto CFDs need much more margin than forex.
How to fix error 134
-
Reduce your lot size
The fastest fix is to trade a smaller volume. A smaller lot needs less margin, so lowering it until the order is accepted usually clears error 134 immediately.
-
Check your free margin against the required margin
Open the Terminal panel (
Ctrl+T), Trade tab, and look at Free Margin. Compare it with the margin the trade needs — if free margin is lower, the order can't open. -
Close or reduce other open positions
Existing trades tie up margin. Closing or partially closing a position frees margin that a new order can use.
-
Size the trade properly — or top up
Use a lot size and margin calculator to work out a size your balance and leverage can support, and only add funds within what you can afford to lose.
Raising leverage lowers the margin a trade needs, but it magnifies both gains and losses to the same degree. The safer fix is almost always a smaller position, sized to your account — not more leverage. Most retail traders lose money, so trade well within your means.

Frequently asked questions
What does error 134 mean in MT4?
Error 134 is 'not enough money'. It means your account doesn't have enough free margin to open the trade at the size you requested. MT4 blocks the order to stop you committing margin you don't have.
How do I fix error 134?
Reduce your lot size, check your free margin in the Terminal ▸ Trade tab against the margin the trade needs, and close other positions to free up margin. If you genuinely need a bigger position, you'll have to deposit more — within what you can afford to lose.
Why do I get 'not enough money' on a small trade?
Usually because other open positions are already using your margin, your leverage is low, or the instrument has a high margin requirement (some indices, metals, and crypto CFDs do). Check free margin, not balance — that's what new orders draw on.
How much margin does a trade need?
Required margin depends on the trade size, the instrument, and your leverage. A margin calculator works it out before you trade. As a rule, smaller lots and higher leverage need less margin — but higher leverage also magnifies losses, so size conservatively.
Does error 134 mean my account is out of money?
Not necessarily — it means insufficient free margin for that specific order, which can happen even with a positive balance if other trades are using your margin. Reducing the lot size or closing a position often lets the order through.
Trading foreign exchange and contracts for difference (CFDs) carries a high level of risk and may not be suitable for all investors. Leverage can work against you as well as for you.
