First, the 30-second check
Before anything else, rule out the simplest causes. Many "MT4 is broken" moments are just a dropped connection or a platform that needs a restart.
- Check your internet works (open any website).
- Look at the bottom-right of MT4 — if it doesn't show live data rates, MT4 isn't connected to your broker.
- Fully close MT4 and reopen it; this clears most temporary glitches.
- Make sure it isn't the weekend — the forex market is closed from Friday evening to Sunday evening.
MT4 won't open, or charts are frozen
- Won't open / install: right-click the shortcut ▸ Run as administrator; if it still won't launch, uninstall and reinstall a fresh copy from your broker, and allow MetaTrader 4 through your firewall/antivirus.
- On a Mac? A Windows
.exewon't open natively — see MT4 for Mac. - Charts frozen / prices not moving: this is almost always a lost data feed, not a crash. Check the connection (bottom-right); a single stuck chart can be refreshed with right-click ▸ Refresh. Full fix → MT4 no connection.
No prices, or you can't log in
- "No connection" / no prices: confirm your internet, then re-check you logged in to the exact server your broker gave you. Full guide → MT4 no connection.
- Login fails / "invalid account": the server is usually the culprit, and you must use your master (not investor) password. Full guide → MT4 login.
You can't place a trade
If the order window won't let you trade, MT4 is usually telling you why — read the message:
- "Trade context is busy" — MT4 is still finishing a previous order; wait and retry → trade context is busy.
- "Off quotes" — the price moved or your broker can't fill it → off quotes (error 136).
- "Market closed" — the instrument is outside its trading hours → market closed.
- Trade buttons greyed out: you may be on an investor (read-only) login, or AutoTrading is off for an EA — check your login type.
If you've tried the matching fix and MT4 still misbehaves, the problem may sit with your broker — server downtime, maintenance, or unreliable execution. Frequent disconnects or constant "off quotes" are often broker-side, not your fault.
Persistent disconnects or requotes?

Frequently asked questions
Why is my MT4 not connecting to the internet?
Usually one of three things: your internet dropped, a firewall or antivirus is blocking MT4, or you logged in to the wrong server. Check the connection indicator at the bottom-right of the platform, then confirm your broker's server name at login. Our MT4 no connection guide walks through each fix.
Why won't MetaTrader 4 open on my computer?
The most common causes are permissions, a corrupted install, or security software blocking it. Try right-clicking the shortcut and choosing 'Run as administrator'. If it still won't launch, uninstall and reinstall a fresh copy of MT4 from your broker.
Why can't I place a trade in MT4?
MT4 usually tells you why in the order window or Journal. 'Trade context is busy' means wait and retry; 'Off quotes' means the price moved; 'Market closed' means the instrument is outside its hours. Greyed-out trade buttons can mean you're on a read-only investor login.
Is MT4 still supported in 2026?
Yes. MetaTrader 4 is still actively maintained (the latest build is 1460, March 2026) and widely offered by brokers, even though MetaQuotes no longer sells new MT4 licences. You download it through a broker rather than from MetaQuotes directly.
My charts froze but the platform didn't crash — what's wrong?
A frozen chart almost always means MT4 lost its live price feed, not that the software broke. Check the connection status at the bottom-right. If it shows no connection, reconnect; if it's a weekend or after-hours, that market is simply closed.
