"Market closed" sounds like an error, but it's really MT4 protecting you from trying to trade a market that's shut. It's about timing — not a fault with the platform, your account, or your connection.
You'll see this in the order window or Journal when the instrument is outside its trading session.

What "market closed" means
Every instrument has set trading hours, defined by your broker and the underlying market. Outside those hours, MT4 won't let an order through — you'll see "market closed." The platform is working correctly; it's just refusing to trade a market that isn't open.
Common causes
- It's the weekend (forex). Currency pairs don't trade from Friday evening until Sunday evening (server time).
- The symbol's daily session is closed. Indices, stocks, and commodities often have daily breaks and shorter sessions than forex.
- A market holiday. The underlying exchange or your broker may be closed for a public holiday.
- Wrong or disabled symbol. A symbol not enabled in Market Watch, or a similarly-named variant with different hours, can show as closed.
How to check a symbol's hours (and fix it)
-
Check the symbol's trading hours
In Market Watch, right-click the symbol ▸ Specification. The dialog lists the instrument's trading sessions by day. If the current time is outside those hours, that's why the market is closed — there's nothing to fix except wait.
-
Confirm it isn't the weekend or a holiday
The forex market closes from around Friday evening to Sunday evening (broker server time), and individual markets close on their own holidays. If so, the symbol reopens when the next session starts.
-
Make sure you've picked the right symbol
Some brokers list near-identical symbols (a standard and a 'cash' or 'raw' variant, or a suffix) with different hours. Confirm you're trading the symbol that's actually in session.
-
Check the symbol is enabled in Market Watch
If a symbol isn't shown in Market Watch, right-click inside the window and choose Symbols (or Show All) to enable it. A symbol that isn't fully enabled won't accept an order yet.
Trading hours in MT4 follow the broker's server time, often a few hours ahead of or behind yours. A market that looks open on your local clock may already be closed on the server. Find the server clock at the top of the Market Watch window and compare the symbol's session to that — this one mismatch explains a lot of surprise "market closed" messages.
Want longer or clearer trading hours?
Trading hours and the instruments offered vary by broker. Compare regulated MT4 brokers to find one whose markets and sessions suit how you trade.

Frequently asked questions
What does 'market closed' mean in MT4?
It means the instrument you're trying to trade is outside its trading hours right now, so MT4 won't let the order through. It's a timing message, not an error with the platform, your account, or your connection. The symbol will trade again once its session reopens.
Why does MT4 say 'market closed' when the market looks open?
MT4 uses your broker's server time, which can differ from your local time by several hours. Check the server clock at the top of the Market Watch window and compare it to the symbol's session hours in its Specification — the mismatch is usually the reason.
How do I see a symbol's trading hours in MT4?
In the Market Watch window, right-click the symbol and choose Specification. The dialog lists the instrument's trading sessions for each day. Compare those times to the server clock in Market Watch to know exactly when the market opens and closes.
Can I trade forex on the weekend in MT4?
No. The forex market closes from around Friday evening to Sunday evening (broker server time), so currency pairs show 'market closed' over the weekend. Some brokers offer a limited range of other instruments (such as certain crypto CFDs) at the weekend — check your broker's symbol hours.
I get 'market closed' but it's a weekday — what's wrong?
Likely a daily session break, a market holiday, or the wrong symbol. Indices and commodities have shorter sessions than forex and pause daily; the underlying market may be on holiday; or a similarly-named symbol with a suffix may have different hours. Check the symbol's Specification.
