XM is one of the more popular routes for an MT4 download: it's a long-established broker offering MetaTrader 4 across desktop, mobile, and WebTrader, with a free demo and a low $5 minimum on live accounts. It's regulated across CySEC, ASIC, DFSA, FSC. Here's how to download XM's MetaTrader 4 and log in.
Figures here — including the $5 minimum deposit and regulation — are accurate to our latest review, but brokers update terms. Confirm the current details on XM's site, and read our full XM review.
How to download XM MetaTrader 4
-
Open your XM account
Create an XM account — a free demo, or a live account (XM's minimum deposit is $5). You'll use these details to log in to MetaTrader 4.
-
Download XM's MetaTrader 4 for your device
From XM, download MetaTrader 4 for your platform — Windows or Mac desktop, the Android or iOS app, or WebTrader, which runs in a browser with no install.
-
Find your XM login number, password, and server
When you open the account, XM provides your MT4 login number, password, and the exact server name. Keep these handy — the right server is essential to connect.
-
Log in to MetaTrader 4
Open MT4, go to
File ▸ Login to Trade Account(orOpen an Accountfor a demo), and enter your XM login number, password, and server. You're connected.
If your login fails
Almost every "invalid account" or "no connection" message at this stage comes down to one of three things: the wrong server selected, the wrong password type (the investor password is read-only — use your master password to trade), or a typo in the login number. Re-check the server name XM sent you and try again.

Frequently asked questions
Is XM MT4 free?
Yes. XM provides the MetaTrader 4 platform free for desktop, mobile, and WebTrader. You need an XM account to trade — a demo is free, and the live-account minimum deposit is $5.
What is my XM MT4 server?
XM assigns your server and sends it with your login number and password when you open the account. In MT4, select that exact server name — using the wrong server is the most common reason a login fails.
Does XM support MT4 on Mac?
Yes. XM offers MetaTrader 4 for Mac and a browser-based WebTrader, plus Windows desktop and mobile apps. See our MT4 for Mac guide for the options.
Can US residents use XM?
No. XM does not accept clients from the United States. US traders need an NFA-regulated broker such as OANDA, tastyfx, or Forex.com.
Does XM offer both MT4 and MT5?
Yes. XM offers both MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5. Choose MT4 if you want the classic platform and its custom indicators and EAs; see our MT4 vs MT5 guide to decide.
