If the bottom-right of MT4 says "No connection" and your prices have frozen, the platform has lost its link to your broker's trade server. The good news: it's almost always a quick fix, and the usual culprit is simply the wrong server or password — not a broken install.
You'll often see "no connection" alongside "invalid account" in the Journal tab — a strong hint the server or password is wrong.

What "no connection" means
MT4 connects to a specific trade server run by your broker. "No connection" means it can't reach or authenticate with that server, so no live prices come through and you can't trade. It's a link problem — between your computer, the network, and the broker — rather than damage to the platform itself.
How to fix MT4 "no connection"
-
Check your internet connection
Confirm other sites and apps load. Reconnect your Wi-Fi, and if you use a VPN, try turning it off — some block trade-server ports.
-
Re-check the server, login, and password
This is the most common cause. Select the exact server name your broker gave you, and use your master password (the investor password is read-only and won't connect for trading).
-
Re-scan the connection
Right-click the connection indicator at the bottom-right of MT4 and choose Rescan Servers, or pick the nearest server. Then log in again via
File ▸ Login to Trade Account. -
Allow MT4 through your firewall and antivirus
Make sure
terminal.exeisn't blocked by Windows Firewall or your antivirus. Add an exception for the MT4 program folder if needed. -
Check for broker downtime
If everything is correct and it still won't connect, the broker's server may be in maintenance. Check the broker's status page or support — and note that frequent outages are a reason to switch.
If MT4 connects but won't let you trade, you may be using the investor password — that's the read-only one. Log in with your master password to place trades. Setting up XM? Our XM MT4 download guide shows where to find your server and login.
When it's the broker, not you
If your details are correct and your internet is fine, the problem may be on the broker's side — server maintenance or an outage. The odd, brief outage is normal. But a broker whose servers are frequently unreachable is costing you trades, and that's a legitimate reason to move to a more reliable one.

Frequently asked questions
What does 'no connection' mean in MT4?
It means MetaTrader 4 isn't connected to your broker's trade server, so prices have stopped updating. The indicator at the bottom-right shows 'No connection' instead of live data rates.
Why won't MT4 connect to the server?
The most common reason is the wrong server selected or the wrong password (the investor password is read-only). Other causes are no internet, a firewall or antivirus blocking MT4, a VPN, or broker-side maintenance.
How do I fix MT4 'no connection'?
Check your internet, then re-select the exact server and use your master password, re-scan servers from the bottom-right indicator, allow terminal.exe through your firewall, and confirm the broker's server isn't down.
Is 'no connection' caused by the wrong server?
Very often, yes. Choosing the wrong trade server — or a typo in the server name — is the single most common cause. Use the exact server name from your broker's welcome email or dashboard.
Can a firewall or antivirus block MT4?
Yes. Security software can block MT4's terminal.exe from reaching the server. Add an exception for the MT4 folder in your firewall and antivirus, then restart the platform.
