An MT4 login needs three details from your broker: your account (login) number, your password, and your server. In
MetaTrader 4, go to File ▸ Login to Trade Account, enter all three, and you're in. The single most
common mistake is picking the wrong server — so we'll cover that too.
How to log in to MT4
-
Open the login window
In the desktop terminal, go to
File ▸ Login to Trade Account. On mobile, open the menu and tap to manage or add an account. -
Enter your login number and password
Type your account (login) number and your password. Use the master password to trade — the investor password is read-only.
-
Select the correct server
Choose the exact server your broker assigned you. This is the step most people get wrong — the server name must match precisely.
-
Click Login
Connect, and the status indicator at the bottom-right should show live data rates. You're logged in and ready to trade or practise.
Where to find your login details
Your broker provides all three when you open an account — usually in a welcome email and in your client dashboard. The login number is your account ID; the password is the one you set (or were issued); the server is a specific name you must match exactly. Setting up XM? Our XM MT4 download guide shows where these appear.
Investor vs master password
The master password lets you log in and trade. The investor password is read-only — useful for showing your account to someone without letting them place trades. If MT4 logs in but the New Order button is greyed out, switch to your master password.
If your MT4 login fails
Almost every failed login comes down to one of these: the wrong server, the investor password used by mistake, a typo in the login number, an old demo that's been archived, or the broker's server being briefly down. Work through them in that order. If MT4 shows "no connection" or "invalid account", our MT4 no connection fix walks through every cause.

Frequently asked questions
How do I log in to MT4?
Open MetaTrader 4 and go to File ▸ Login to Trade Account. Enter your account (login) number and master password, select the exact server your broker gave you, and click Login. On mobile, tap to manage accounts and add your login the same way.
What is my MT4 server?
Your server is the specific trade server your broker runs your account on. The broker sends the exact server name with your login details when you open the account (often in a welcome email or your client dashboard). You must select that precise name in MT4.
Why does my MT4 login fail?
The most common reasons are choosing the wrong server, using the investor (read-only) password instead of the master password, a typo in the login number, an archived/inactive demo, or the broker's server being temporarily down. Re-check the server and password first.
What is the difference between the investor and master password?
The master password lets you log in and place trades. The investor password is read-only — it lets someone view the account but not trade. If MT4 connects but won't let you trade, you're probably using the investor password.
Can I log in to MT4 on mobile?
Yes. In the iOS or Android app, open the accounts menu, tap to log in to an existing account, search for your broker, select the server, and enter your login number and password — the same three details as on desktop.
