The MACD (Moving Average Convergence Divergence) combines trend and momentum in one built-in MT4 indicator. It's derived from two moving averages and a signal line, and traders use it for crossovers, zero-line crosses, and divergence from price.
How to add the MACD in MT4
-
Open the indicator
In MT4, click
Insert ▸ Indicators ▸ Oscillators ▸ MACD. -
Set the periods
Leave the defaults — 12, 26, 9 — or adjust them, applied to Close.
-
Click OK
The MACD plots in a sub-window below the chart, with a histogram and a signal line.
How to read the MACD
- Signal-line crossovers — the MACD crossing its signal line hints at a momentum shift.
- Zero line — above zero suggests bullish momentum; below, bearish.
- Divergence — price making a new high while the MACD doesn't can warn of fading momentum.
MT4's MACD display quirk
MT4's built-in MACD draws the MACD itself as a histogram with the signal line on top — different from the "classic" two-line MACD. It's the same calculation, just displayed differently. If you prefer the classic look, many traders install a custom "MACD 2-line" indicator (see how to install indicators).
The MACD is built from moving averages, so it lags and gives false signals in choppy markets. Use it with trend context and a stop loss, and test on a demo. Nothing here is advice; most retail traders lose money.

Frequently asked questions
What is the MACD?
MACD (Moving Average Convergence Divergence) is a trend-and-momentum indicator built from the difference between two moving averages, plus a signal line. Traders watch it for crossovers, moves across the zero line, and divergence from price.
How do I add the MACD in MT4?
Click Insert ▸ Indicators ▸ Oscillators ▸ MACD, keep the default periods (12, 26, 9) or adjust them, and click OK. It appears in a sub-window beneath the chart as a histogram with a signal line.
Why does MT4's MACD look different?
MT4's built-in MACD draws the MACD line itself as a histogram and adds the signal line on top — unlike the 'classic' MACD, which shows two lines and a separate histogram of their difference. It's the same idea, just displayed differently; many traders install a custom 'MACD 2-line' indicator if they prefer the classic view.
What is a MACD crossover?
A MACD crossover is when the MACD crosses its signal line — up is often read as bullish momentum, down as bearish. Crossovers near the zero line carry more weight. They're popular but lagging signals, not guarantees.
What are the best MACD settings?
The default 12, 26, 9 is by far the most common and a sensible starting point. Faster settings react sooner but whipsaw more. There's no universally best setting — test on a demo for your market and timeframe.
