Williams %R (Percent Range) is a built-in MT4 momentum oscillator that measures where the current close sits within the recent high–low range. Unusually, it is plotted on a negative scale from 0 down to -100 — readings above -20 are often called overbought, below -80 oversold. It's very similar to the Stochastic, and traders watch it for momentum shifts and potential exhaustion.

How to read Williams %R
- The negative scale — %R runs from 0 (close at the top of the range) down to -100 (close at the bottom). The negative values are normal, not an error.
- Overbought / oversold — above -20 hints at possible exhaustion to the upside, below -80 to the downside (neither is a guaranteed reversal).
- vs the Stochastic — %R is a single line on an inverted 0 to -100 scale; the Stochastic uses 0 to 100 with %K/%D lines and smoothing. Same idea, different presentation.
- Divergence — price making a new high while %R doesn't can warn of weakening momentum.
Limitations
In a strong trend Williams %R can sit above -20 (or below -80) for a long time — selling just because it's "overbought" is a classic mistake. Treat %R as one input among several, always with a stop loss, and test it on a demo. Nothing here is financial advice, and most retail traders lose money.

Frequently asked questions
What is Williams %R?
Williams' Percent Range (%R) is a momentum oscillator that measures where the current close sits relative to the high–low range over a set period. It is plotted on a negative scale from 0 to -100. Readings above -20 are often called overbought and below -80 oversold.
How do I add Williams %R in MT4?
Click Insert ▸ Indicators ▸ Oscillators ▸ Williams' Percent Range, set the period (default 14), and click OK. The indicator appears in a sub-window beneath the chart on a 0 to -100 scale.
Why is the Williams %R scale negative?
By design, %R runs from 0 at the top down to -100 at the bottom — the negative values are normal, not an error. 0 means the close is at the top of the recent range; -100 means it is at the bottom. Above -20 is the overbought zone, below -80 the oversold zone.
What is the difference between Williams %R and the Stochastic?
They are close cousins: both compare the close to the recent high–low range. The main differences are that %R uses a single line on an inverted 0 to -100 scale, while the Stochastic uses 0 to 100 with %K and %D lines and built-in smoothing. See the MT4 Stochastic guide for that one.
Is Williams %R a reliable buy/sell signal?
No indicator is a reliable signal on its own. Williams %R is a momentum gauge, not a guarantee — it works best alongside trend analysis and risk management, and in a strong trend it can sit in the overbought or oversold zone for a long time. Most retail traders lose money.
