The MT5 download is free, and setup takes only a few minutes. The one thing to know: you don't get MetaTrader 5 from MetaQuotes directly — you download it from a broker, who provides the same platform plus the account you trade with. New to MetaTrader 5? Start with what MT5 is, or follow the steps below.
How to download MetaTrader 5
-
Open an account with a regulated broker
MetaTrader 5 comes from a broker, not from MetaQuotes directly. Open an account — a free demo is fine — with a regulated broker that offers MT5, so you have a download link and login details.
-
Download MT5 for your device
From the broker's downloads page, get the MetaTrader 5 app for Windows, macOS, Android or iPhone — or open MT5 WebTrader, which runs in any browser with nothing to install.
-
Install and open MetaTrader 5
Run the installer (or open the mobile app) and follow the prompts. On Windows, keep the default folder and finish; MT5 launches automatically.
-
Log in with your account number, password, and server
Choose your broker's MT5 server, then log in with your login number and password. You're ready to chart and place demo trades across forex and other markets.
Download MT5 for your device
Pick your platform for a step-by-step guide:
- MT5 for PC (Windows) — the full desktop terminal, with custom indicators, Expert Advisors and the Strategy Tester.
- MT5 for Mac (macOS) — your broker's Mac app, WebTrader, or the Windows terminal via Parallels.
- MT5 for Android — the mobile app from Google Play for trading on the go.
- MT5 for iPhone & iPad (iOS) — the App Store app for iOS devices.

What you can trade on MT5
Because MetaTrader 5 is multi-asset, a broker can offer forex, indices, commodities, shares, futures and crypto CFDs in one platform — alongside more timeframes, Depth of Market, and a built-in economic calendar. Exactly which markets you get depends on the broker, so check their instrument list before you open an account.
MetaTrader 5 uses the MQL5 language, which isn't compatible with MT4's MQL4. If you rely on a specific MT4 Expert Advisor or custom indicator, it won't run on MT5 unless it's rewritten for MQL5 — worth checking before you switch.
Should you download MT5 or MT4?
If you trade forex and value the biggest ecosystem of EAs and indicators, MT4 is still the simpler choice — download MT4 instead. Choose MT5 for multi-asset markets, the economic calendar, or faster backtesting. Our MT4 vs MT5 comparison lays out the trade-offs in full.

Frequently asked questions
How do I download MetaTrader 5?
Open an account with a regulated broker that offers MT5, then download the MetaTrader 5 app for your device from the broker's downloads page — or use the browser-based WebTrader. MetaQuotes doesn't sell a direct consumer download, so in practice you get MT5 through a broker. The platform is free.
Is the MT5 download free?
Yes. MetaTrader 5 is free to download and use on desktop, web, and mobile. You only need a funded broker account to trade live; a demo account is free and uses virtual money.
Can I download MT5 without a broker?
Not the official terminal in practice. MetaQuotes does not offer a direct consumer download, so you download MetaTrader 5 from a broker, who supplies the platform plus the account you trade with.
What devices does MT5 run on?
MetaTrader 5 has apps for Windows, macOS, Android and iPhone/iPad, plus a browser-based WebTrader. You can run the same account across several devices and they stay in sync through the broker's servers.
Should I download MT5 or MT4?
Download MT5 if you want stocks, futures, more timeframes, a built-in economic calendar, or faster backtesting. Stick with MT4 if you trade forex and rely on its larger library of Expert Advisors and indicators. Many brokers offer both, so you can try each on a demo. See our MT4 vs MT5 comparison.
Trading foreign exchange and contracts for difference (CFDs) carries a high level of risk and may not be suitable for all investors. Leverage can work against you as well as for you.
